Bradford Women’s Company

DUY established the Bradford Women’s Company in 2015 following an approach from Bradford Families First to undertake a piece of work with women at risk. This led to a new partnership with ‘Staying Put’ and the Families First initiative ‘Enough is Enough’.

DUY has continued to engage with vulnerable women across Bradford, specifically targeting those with mental health needs, experience of domestic abuse and who are socially isolated.

The company meet weekly and have performed at a number of local theatre venues including the Bradford Alhambra, St George’s Hall and the Northern School of Contemporary Dance.

“Dance has been a way for women to let go and rebuild themselves without stigma and labelling. The sessions bring women from all different backgrounds together in a safe place with the support of child care facilities. The level of support and work put into the sessions is apparent and long lasting.”

Custodial Work

Continuing the legacy of DUY’s parent charity Dance United’s focus on criminal justice work, DUY has remained committed to delivering intensive projects in women’s prisons across the north. Since 2016, DUY has been offering one-week projects for small groups of female residents culminating in performances for prison staff and residents.

We have ongoing  partnerships with HMP Askham Grange (York), HMP New Hall (Wakefield) and HMP Low Newton (Durham).

DUY has recently acquired funding from the Evan Cornish Foundation to test the effectiveness of two-week intensive projects in the prisons, along with weekly sessions. These projects are due to take place in 2021/22
