Freelance Vacancy
Dance United Yorkshire (DUY) seek to nurture and support the artistic growth of local talent by contracting two emerging choreographers to work together in a unique collaboration.
In partnership with a world-leading and Olivier Award-winning Dance Company (confidential until the interview stage), this will be a ground-breaking new piece of dance theatre featuring an intergenerational cast of participants from Bradford's cultural engagement priority areas.
Overseen and guided by one of the most celebrated and respected dance artists today, this project will utilise their experience as a choreographer whose success is built on imaginative, highly accessible and relevant productions.
The project will be publicly announced in September 2024 and will take place in July next year as part of Bradford 2025, UK City of Culture.
The Creative Process (September – December 2024):
Selected candidates will be involved in a 2-week creative process alongside the choreographer’s creative team and DUY’s artistic team to develop concepts, themes, and narratives for the piece. Candidates will help develop these ideas further by trialling movement and choreography with undergraduate dancers and DUY’s community groups.
The overall vision will be consolidated by December 2024, and the team will have a clear direction for delivering and realising the piece. The emerging choreographers will also contribute to discussions with composers, designers, and producers.
The Delivery and Performance Phase (January – July 2025):
Supported by DUY's highly experienced delivery team, the emerging choreographers will direct weekly sessions with six participatory groups from across Bradford. The cast will consist of 65 dancers aged 8 – 80. The delivery period will also include intensive weekend rehearsals at which the award-winning choreographer will be present.
